WIP Update – 14 Apr 26

I did look over what I’d written on Chapter 19 of RttW in preparation to get some writing done, only to get distracted while thinking up an appropriate comeback for Pawel to have for Bobby’s smart mouth and ended up spending what time I had left on other things. If you’re more invested in the stories currently in serialization than the project in development that is OreHosa, it must be frustrated to see it occupy so much of my time and energy. However, I don’t have an editor breathing down my neck or locking me up to meet my deadlines, so the pull of my creative whims tend to win out. I was developing Lieutenant Lin’s backstory and in the wee hours, I decided to debut a new character on DA, filling out my current allotment, so they’re probably going to get a little more of my money to open up more character slots. I may talk about the new chara more later, but as Lin took up so much of my time, I want to focus on her for now.

You see, much like I did with Ariana and Oholibama, I deliberately designed Lin apart from my own tastes. Because one of the main focal points of the plot of OreHosa is the budding romance between Carlo and Maya, setting up the Battalion EO Officer as the sort of sitcom nemesis, especially in the early part of the story, was a natural choice. Since she’s such a stick in the mud, she’s fun to tease, but things really turned around for me when I was trying to get reliable results out of the age manipulation tags. When trying to portray Lin as a child, I instead got her holding a baby. At first, I was just going to file it away as another botched rendering (and even though I posted it, it has the anatomical errors of the kid with six fingers and Lin missing her left pinkie). However, I decided to run with it and make it a part of her story. Now, the humorless schoolmarm type has another side as a doting young mother stuck in a loveless marriage out of filial obligation. Her character quickly became much richer and I found myself liking her more and more. I nearly devoted a whole day just to making renderings of her to try to portray some of my ideas about her character and backstory. (Also, her having a rather different body type to Maya allows me to run some different experiments with how the system interprets its assorted tags. The more time I spend with her, the fonder I get, which is true of the others as well, so I guess familiarity doesn’t always breed contempt.

Anyway, I’ll once again say I’m going to direct a little more attention to RttW and maybe I’ll actually deliver on it. Stay tuned.
