WIP Update – 10 Feb 25

I did some work on Chapter 2 of CoP and fiddled around on the Korushi Calendar a bit, too. I originally planned for Chapter 2 to pick up the next day after the cut to the present in Chapter 1, but I changed my mind when I came up with a better opening to introduce the audience to Ellis. It’ll be interesting introducing the other Protectors from his perspective, so that’ll be this week’s fun. Stay tuned.

WIP Update – 18 Jan 25

I powered my way through Chapter 1 of CoP as promised, and while I was letting it sit before reviewing and posting it, I picked up Colony Flipper and worked on it a bit. I was also doing a fair bit of work in peripheral materials, setting up the educational backgrounds of the younger Protectors.

Because the Kingdom of Murabit is inspired by Morocco, it has a French-style education system with six years primary and six years secondary education (divided into upper and lower halves). While doing their training, Protector Candidates take enough equivalent general education coursework to get their certif (certificat d’études primaires) and satisfy the Kingdom’s compulsory education requirement, but also cover secondary education up to Year 12 so that they can get their baccalauréat, but it’s fairly rare for them to go on to university, which would have to happen after induction into the Protectors proper or if they transfer into the Auxiliary. Three of the younger Candidates–Rio, Kirik and Eiri–were held back so they could be placed in the same class as Ellis (the Child of Promise, who we’ll be properly introduced to in Chapter 2), while the young precog Soren skipped grades to be placed in the same class. While Rio is Ellis’ personal bodyguard, he has three other Protectors in the near vicinity at school and often two or three more maintaining surveillance at more of a distance. Originally I was going to let the character progress in school at a normal rate, but I decided it was more in line with the Protectors’ thinking to have additional coverage in the classroom rather than have the other Protectors distributed in other parts of the school where it would take them longer to respond in the event of an emergency.

Anyway, if I can find the time, I may do a little more work on either CoP or Colony Flipper before switching over to RttW o Monday. Stay tuned.

WIP Update – 17 Jan 25

I devoted most of my available time in the morning to writing on Chapter 1 of CoP and got through the second section. I intended to make my way through the third section in the evening, but I was overcome by a maelstrom of variable consciousness, so no further progress was made. I usually like to let a manuscript sit for at least a day before putting it up, so I’ll either push the update schedule back a day or just try to get the chapter out as I finish it. We’ll see. Stay tuned.

WIP Update – 16 Jan 25

Wednesday was really busy and so I conked out before I could get any writing done, so yesterday I appropriated a little time I probably would’ve otherwise dedicated to grading papers to making headway on Chapter 1 of CoP. I was hoping to get more done in the evening, but that didn’t happen. However, I did do some simulations of the rest of the second section of the chapter, so I should be able to get that done fairly quickly, and I’m thinking of keeping the third section a bit on the short side, so I should be able to meet my deadline. Stay tuned.

WIP Update – 14 Jan 25

I’m continuing to move along in Chapter 1 of CoP and should be finishing the second section soon. Stay tuned.

WIP Update – 13 Jan 25

I managed to defy my usual habits by actually making some decent writing progress on a a day off. I’ve gotten well into the second section of Chapter 1 of CoP. I ended up deciding to add a scene there and so that’ll cause things to take a bit longer. I’m going to to continue to move along as all the fun of the work week begins. Stay tuned.

WIP Update – 12 Jan 25

I managed to get a little work done on Chapter 1 of CoP before going to bed last night. Given my fuzzy state of consciousness, I imagine I’ll have a fair bit of work to do when I go back over it. Anyway, if I can keep moving at this pace, I should have no problem meeting this week’s deadline (which would sound more impressive if I hadn’t spent nearly a month on the current cycle). Stay tuned.

WIP Update – 11 Jan 25

Besides getting a fair bit of viewing done for review purposes, I also was able to make some more progress on Chapter 1 of CoP, nearly finishing the first of the three sections of the chapter. Since I didn’t do anything story-related over the break, I think I’ll stick with CoP next week with the intention of getting the chapter out. Stay tuned.

WIP Update – 08 Jan 25

As predicted, I didn’t get any story progress done during the break. I did do a little work on the map of Korush for CoP, but I didn’t feel that warranted a post. Anyway, I surprised myself by actually getting a little writing done on Chapter 1 of CoP. Certainly don’t expect me to finish by the weekend at this rate. I’m going to be rather busy for the next couple weeks with the start of the new term and as usual, I’m pretty tired by the time I get home. Still, I’ll see what I can get done. Stay tuned.

WIP Update – 13 Dec 24

Thursday is my busiest day of the week with my current schedule, and with me having next to no energy by the time I get home lately, I didn’t accomplish much beyond adding a few items to the list, which I didn’t think was enough to warrant a post. My schedule was much more open today, but it was shocking how little I accomplish. For whatever reason, I was working on the map of Korush for CoP a while, then I did a little bit on Chapter 10 of RttW, but I got distracted detailing a relevant key item, then similar items (specifically, contracts and such). From there, I started thinking about the Trade Guilds. In the DnD scenario I was building for my niece a few years back, I drew up the guild structure for the setting, and I don’t intend to reinvent the wheel, but there are some bits that don’t fit the setting of RttW, so I need to account for that, but I didn’t get farther than reviewing the guild list for that setting (there are 108 guilds there with numerous subordinate companies) and thinking about how to work out the Trade Skills system. (I’ve already developed a simplified version for my alternative game system, so I have to decide if I want to go along those lines or do something a little different.) Of course, none of that gets me across the finish line, so we’re going to have to just move the cycle along and come back around next time. I intend to continue working over the weekend, but don’t expect the chapter to be finished just yet. Stay tuned.
