16 Dec 19

This week we've got a couple anime films. First is Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection, which is the payoff for the recap trilogy covered here a few months back. Next is the feature spinoff of Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl. Moving on to manga, we have Volume 4 of Bokuben and Volume 4 of Quintessential Quintuplets. Next is a manga that was loaned to me, an anthology of trippy shorts called Mushi to Uta. Now, as you're no doubt aware, a certain film is coming out this week. I can't guarantee I'm going to see it, but I will have some related content. Also look for more JJ2. Stay tuned.

The big bad's taken form and now it's time for him to be taken out in Chapter 41 of Tellus. I would've had this out sooner, but I was stuck on the very end. Now we've just got the epilogue and we can move on to the next big thing. In the meantime, look for reviews coming up (Monday seems to be the thing lately). Stay tuned.

09 Dec 19

Our last couple entries for the Fall 2019 anime season are the excellent Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and basically the Japanese version of Alien Nation, Cop Craft. For our manga coverage, we have Volume 3 of Bokuben and Volume 3 of Quintessential Quintuplets. We also have the debut of a new series by Dagashi Kashi creator Kotoyama, Yofukashi no Uta. We've got a couple anime films on the docket for the next round of reviews and the final confrontation in Tellus. Stay tuned.

We're picking up the anime reviews where we left off in September. To link up with our current manga coverage, we've got Season 1 of Quintessential Quintuplets and the bonus OAV for Bokuben. From there, we go on to Volume 2 of the Bokuben manga and Volume 2 of Quintessential Quintuplets. We've also got a recent release in the form of Volume 8 of Yakumo-san wa Ezuke ga Shitai. Look for more anime and manga on the way, plus more CeleKing3. Stay tuned.

I'm a day late because it took me too long to transcribe the chapter, but a belated Happy Thanksgiving to my countrymen. (I don't know if "happy" applies for most people with regards to Black Friday.) Anyway, on to the main event. It's Chapter 15 of JJ2. Look for anime and manga reviews coming up. Stay tuned.

25 Nov 19

One of the films I saw on the flight back to Japan is going to be saved for February for thematic purposes, but we've still got a trio of movies to look at. On the heels of Avengers: Endgame is Spider-Man: Far From Home. We also have the anime film Rider Your Wave and the scifi thriller Annihilation. For our manga coverage, we're going to be looking at two series that are their respective author's spin on the same premise. From Taishi Tsutsui, we've got Volume 1 of We Never Learn and from Negi Haruba, Volume 1 of Quintessential Quintuplets. We'll be mixing our manga coverage with some anime that's still left over from last season that I didn't get to cover before the Halloween stuff. Look for more JJ2 as well. Stay tuned.

Well, it's been a dang long time, but we finally catch up to Tobias and the gang in Chapter 40 of Tellus. We're almost at the finale, so gear up for that. (Hopefully it won't take so long this time.) We've go Part 2 of our in-flight cinema reviews coming up this weekend. Stay tuned.

18 Nov 19

I don't get out to the theater too much anymore, so the main way I take in recent releases is when I'm going back and forth between the States and Japan. This last time, I saw a total of eight films. One will be held back for thematic purposes until a later date and we'll be dividing the remainder into two parts. Let's start with the 800-pound gorilla of this year, Avengers: Endgame. Next is a counterpoint in the form of the more lighthearted Shazam! Rounding things out are the stylish action of John Wick, Chapter 3: Parabellum and the catastrophic destruction of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Moving on, we've got a lot of manga reviews in the pipe, so we'll kick things off with Volume 7 of Twilight Princess. Besides manga, we'll also be covering the second half of our in-flight film reviews. In other news, I actually had the latest chapter of Tellus finished last Thursday, but I didn't get around to reviewing it and doing the HTML conversion, so now we'll be getting it this week. As noted on the blog, due to running out of lead time, we'll be scaling back to one story chapter per week. Hopefully we can get back in the swing of things. Stay tuned.

11 Nov 19

I've been out of action quite a while. I'd warned you that you might not see anything two weeks ago, but I was so wiped by the time I returned to Japan that I couldn't bring myself to get the update together then and even after working on recovery last week, I still found myself too tired yesterday to get it out then. However, we now have the update originally scheduled for 03 Nov. It's a somewhat oblique take on the usual post-Halloween theme of religious horror. We start with a Satanic cult in The Seventh Victim, followed by pagan loonies in The Wicker Man and its bonkers 2006 remake. Next we get to have fun with hellish bureaucracy in Hellraiser: Judgment. Last but not least, we break from the theme to cover a recent release, one I'd wanted to see while I was back in the States but didn't get the chance to, so I made an outing of it this past Saturday. And that film is the superb Joker. (Go see it if you haven't yet.) From here, I'll be giving you airplane movies over the next couple weeks and then some recent anime I haven't covered yet, along with plenty of manga for the foreseeable future. Let's see if I can't also get you the latest chapters of Tellus and JJ2 while I'm at it. Stay tuned.

The mascot is always ready for battle, but maybe not everyone is so raring to go. It's time for Chapter 22 of CeleKing3. I know I've dropped the ball again on Tellus, but it's better to delay the release than to deliver a half-baked chapter. In other news, there's a certain cannibalistic psychologist who will be making an appearance in the upcoming reviews. Stay tuned.

You feel that tingling sensation? That's not your imagination. And, no, I'm not posting my review of The Tingler either. We're looking at creepy crawlies this week, some scaled up as needed. Speaking of scaled-up critters, we've got a giant alien ant invasion in the 1954 classic , arachnids in Camel Spiders, Arachnophobia, and Ticks. Finally we have creepy crawlies that would fit right in with last week's pictures in 2006's Slither. Next week we'll close out this month's feature with Dr. Hannibal Lecter and some TBD company. Look for more Tellus and CeleKing3 as well. Stay tuned.

The mascot is taking life easy, but things aren't so chill in the Palatine at the moment. Simply pounding them into submission over the course of a three-week air campaign wouldn't quite make for the eponymous Miravel World War, so we're about to add a new wrinkle in Chapter 14 of JJ2. Look for reviews coming up in the next couple days. Stay tuned.

13 Oct 19

It may not be Friday, but the 13th strikes me as a good day for more Halloween reviews. Our theme this week is bodysnatchers. We kick things off with the original 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers, followed by its 1978 remake (sequel?), the 1993 Body Snatchers, and 2007's The Invasion. Last but not least is an adaptation of a Robert Heinlein story with a similar theme, The Puppet Masters, which like the '78 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, also stars Donald Sutherland. We've got creepy crawlies for you next week, possibly more Tellus (if I can pen the whole chapter in a day, which isn't too likely) and more JJ2. Stay tuned.

We see the mascot getting ready for game time. Yasuko might be making preparations more in line with your expectations in Chapter 21 of CeleKing3. For those of you not aware of the situation here in Japan, Typhoon #19 is rolling in and we might be in for a bumpy ride. If the electricity's knocked out, I'm probably not going to be getting the weekend update out. Obviously I'll have bigger problems. If it ends up not being so bad, look for bodysnatchers in the next couple days. Stay tuned.

06 Oct 19

We kick off this year's Halloween film review feature with some vampire flicks. We start with the great-grandaddy of them all, 1922's Nosferatu. Next is poor Bela Lugosi being typecast in The Return of the Vampire. We follow with a vampire movie that seems like more of a zombie film, The Last Man on Earth, with Vincent Price. For a more modern take, we've got Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino teaming up for From Dusk Till Dawn. Lastly, Lucy Liu and Michael Chiklis team up in Rise: Blood Hunter. Next week, we've got bodysnatchers. Don't sleep. In other news, the next chapter of Tellus is going to be delayed (no surprise), but we will have more CeleKing3, so look for that. Stay tuned.

It may be the season for goblins, ghouls and ghosts, but you'll find none of that in Chapter 13 of JJ2. (Although I wonder how the story would change if we did have such things. We did technically have a werewolf in the previous book.) For something a little more in the spirit of the season, look forward to our first round of Halloween reviews, starting with some vampire flicks. Stay tuned.

We've got more fruits of the Summer 2019 anime season this week. First is a piece from the To Aru franchise, A Certain Scientific Accelerator, the Fate spinoff The Case Files of Lord El-Melloi II: Rail Zeppelin Grace Note, and more isekai trash in the form of Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?, whose manga adaptation has already seen coverage on the site. (What is it with these daggone long titles?) We cap things off with Volume 5 of the Macross Frontier manga, bringing it to a close. The anime wrapping next week will have to wait because we're going into our usual October scary movie extravaganza, starting off with vampires. Also be on the lookout for more JJ2. Stay tuned.

The Summer 2019 anime season is winding down and I've got a selection of series for you. First up is the survival comedy Are You Lost?, followed by the space adventure Kanata Lost in Space, the enjoyable isekai trash Demon Lord Retry!, and True Grit with monsters To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts. Last and probably least, we've got Volume 4 of the Macross Frontier manga. I can't say if I'll have those OG Macross reviews I mentioned last week ready by next week, but we'll see. Otherwise it'll be more of the recently wrapped series. Speaking of things that have been delayed, you'll finally be getting Chapter 39 of Tellus along with more CeleKing3. Stay tuned.

Yes, we've got another delay with Tellus, but I'm almost there. Really. In the meantime, we've got Chapter 12 of JJ2. And as far as other delays go, seeing as how I've only watched one ep of OG Macross so far, that'll have to wait, but you can enjoy some anime that recently wrapped instead. Stay tuned.

When I started covering the Macross Frontier manga, it didn't take me long to want to go back to the source. Building off that, we actually have a cohesive theme this week that I plan on expanding to cover the rest of the franchise (but with 36 eps to the original series and 49 for Macross 7, to say nothing of film and OAV spinoffs, it's going to take me a while). Anyway, let's get things started with the Macross Frontier TV series, which was made to celebrate the franchise's 25th anniversary. Like a lot of series these days, it would go on to get film adaptations, but unlike most compilation films, this grows into more of its own thing. Next up are the two Macross Frontier films, The False Songstress and The Wings of Goodbye. We close things out with Volume 3 of the manga, which is actually a bit of an improvement over the previous entries. Ideally, I'll have the original series and DYRL next week. Meanwhile, we should have more Tellus (hopefully) and JJ2. Stay tuned.

We've got a bit of a hodgepodge for you today. First off is our first representative of 2019 in the movie section, the Youjo Senki theatrical release Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie. Next is the latest mobile game that's been eating my time, the puzzle RPG Elemental Story. For manga, we have a recent release, Volume 29 of the Attack on Titan and Volume 2 of Macross Frontier. Speaking of Macross Frontier, we'll be featuring the TV series and the movies next week as part of a feature on the franchise as a whole. It's going to take me time to rewatch the other TV series, but I'll see what I can do. Look for more Tellus (maybe) and CeleKing3 in the days ahead. Stay tuned.

When you're stuck between a rock and a hard place, there are no good solutions, only less bad ones. We wrangle with this concept in Chapter 11 of JJ2. On a lighter note, reviews are coming up soon (and I'm still not 100% on what they're going to be either). Stay tuned.

When I heard a title like A Certain Scientific Railgun, I was thinking it was a story about the development of an electromagnetic projectile launcher. It's a bit different than that. We also have the series' sequel, A Certain Scientific Railgun S, along with the OAV episode for the latter and the MMR: Much More Railgun bonus episodes. Next up, we're starting coverage of a new manga series, the adaptation of Macross Frontier, starting with Volume 1. This has prompted me to revisit the source material, so that might be something for next week. Look for more JJ2 as well. Stay tuned.

I found myself in a whimsical mood and what's more whimsical that Wes Anderson movies? This week I've got two stop-motion animated films that he helmed: Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isle of Dogs. Our next pair of films got some mileage in my junior high art classes: The Agony and the Ecstasy and Lust for Life. Last but not least, we bring our coverage of Akira to an end with Volume 6 of the manga. I've got a certain scientific series in mind for next week's reviews. We should also have the delayed chapter of Tellus and more CeleKing3. Stay tuned.

We've heard about Admiral Menahem Globus for a while now, but we haven't met him in person. Until today, that is. As you might imagine based on his reputation, he's a bit of an angry person. Maybe if his computer had a relaxing wallpaper like the picture of the mascot above, tens of thousands of people wouldn't have to die every time he has a bad day. Well, without further ado, it's Chapter 10 of JJ2. As for the missing chapter of Tellus, I'll have it up next week and we'll be shifting the schedule from then on, so now Tobias and company can hang out with Yasuko. I'll probably slap together some film reviews based on some vague theme this weekend. Look forward to that. Stay tuned.

I decided to kick off this week's reviews with one of my favorite movies and branch out from there. We start things off with the best Hitchcock film Hitchcock never made, 1963's Charade, starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. Because the movie was so good, the writer and director came back together to make Arabesque with Gregory Peck taking the lead. Going back to Cary Grant, next up is The Bachelor and the Bobby-soxer, co-starring Shirley Temple in one of her comparatively few adult roles. A grownup Shirley Temple provides the connection with our last film for the week, That Hagen Girl, featuring Ronald Reagan in the lead. We close things out with Volume 5 of Akira. Other than finishing our coverage of the Akira manga next week, I have no idea what else will be on the menu. Look for more Tellus and JJ2 as well. Stay tuned.

Next up is Volume 4 of the Akira manga and Volume 1 of Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?, otherwise known as Okaasan Online in some markets. I like to call the series "Kougeki Mama", but apparently the common abbreviation is "OkaSuki", which I'll probably use from now on for brevity's sake. I don't have a plan for next week's reviews yet, but we do have CeleKing3 for sure. Stay tuned.

If everyone was as lazy as the mascot, we'd have no conflict in the world. However, we've got folks with plots and plans, schemes and scams, not just on our little blue marble in the universe but also on Miravel. Surely you didn't expect everything to go smoothly in a story with the subtitle "The Miravel World War", did you? It's time for Chapter 9 of JJ2. This week is our first installment in a two-part look into the (mis)adventures of a Dr. Pepper-swilling mad scientist who occasionally sounds like a Japanese Peewee Herman with Steins;Gate. For good measure, we also have the extra OAV episode, the Sagacious Wisdom of Cognitive Computing micro-series, and Steins;Gate: The Movie - Load Region of Déjà Vu. Out last item on the list is Volume 3 of Akira. Why just one volume? Because they're frickin' long and I'm only about halfway into Volume 5 and need to buy myself some time. In light of the recent tragedy that befell Kyoto Animation, there may be some people who have started digging into their oeuvre, either out of curiosity or as an act of solidarity. Some of their works are already featured on the site and I just so happen to have another one to add (though the timing is entirely coincidental). We've got Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid and the accompanying OAV. Moving on to our main event, we're going to be covering the Akira manga and we've got Volume 1 and Volume 2 to get us started. And to round out this week's reviews, I've also got the 1988 film adaptation for you. "Ikare, heishi yo!" I was originally going to cover Season 3 of Attack on Titan as a single unit, but I decided that because of both the gap between the two parts and the tonal shift, it would be better to look at them separately, so here's Part 1 and Part 2. Speaking of tonal shifts, the next item on the menu is Season 1 of We Never Learn: BOKUBEN. Lastly, we conclude our coverage of Macross 7 Trash with Volume 7 and Volume 8. That takes care of that. Back in February they released a film that continues the story of Code Geass, but to warm up the audience beforehand, they edited the TV series to make a trilogy of compilation films. If you want to see what a 50-episode series looks like after a Weed Whacker is taken to it, we've got Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion I - Initiation, Lelouch of the Rebellion II - Transgression and Lelouch of the Rebellion III - Glorification. And if that's not enough disappointment for you, we've also got Volume 5 and Volume 6 of Macross 7 Trash. I'll see if I can't brighten things up a bit next week with some recently concluded series. This being Father's Day, it would make sense to do something father-themed for this week's reviews. Well, we've got a major character who's potentially the father of an illegitimate kid, but more on that in a moment. Last week, I covered the game, so now it's time for the TV series Chain Chronicle: The Light of Haecceitas. We also have the Re:Zero OAV "Memory Snow" and the scifi racer TAILENDERS. Moving on, we're starting a new manga series: Macross 7 Trash. "Talk about truth in advertising!" you say, smart aleck. Anyway, we've got Volume 1 and Volume 2 to get the ball rolling. As a slight disclaimer, I actually have the 2009 omnibus release, but I'm going by the original tankoubon release for review purposes. Do you remember in Tzipi's Garden where Marius talked about how Zadok subjugated Elba during the war, how they rounded up a group of leaders to sign the terms of surrender, executed them when they refused, and repeated until they got what they wanted? Well, I have a feeling General Adeen would love nothing more than to take that approach with the nations of Miravel. He's going to have to settle for something a little milder in Chapter 5 of JJ2. We've still got reviews on the way. Stay tuned.

As we get ourselves back on schedule, a wild subplot appears in Chapter 33 of Tellus. It's one thing to see Chekov's gun laying about, but it feels like we're watching someone load it, fit it with a scope and double-checking their enemies list. In other news, we've got more JJ2 and reviews ahead of us. Stay tuned.

It's been a while since I last posted any video game reviews. It's six months after release, but our first entry is a heavy-hitter: Super Smash Bros. Ulitmate. (Given that the next DLC chara should be revealed at E3, that makes this somewhat timely.) We also have two mobile games I picked up recently: Dragalia Lost and Chain Chronicle 3. Next up is manga and we've got Volume 6 of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Volume 7 of Yakumo-san wa Ezuke ga Shitai. Next week we'll be starting our look at the Macross 7 spinoff manga Macross 7 Trash and something else that is yet to be determined. Look for more Tellus and JJ2. Stay tuned.

After the weeklong delay with the chapter of Tellus, what's the holdup this time? To be honest, I just didn't get around to doing the daggone update. Also, this is another big chapter, definitely the main showpiece for the first act of the story. For some perspective, this chapter clocks in at 10K words. The preceding 11 chapter at 20K total. (I could never write for TV, that's for certain.) Anyway, we've been building up to this moment, so here's Chapter 12 of CeleKing3. Look for reviews tomorrow, games and some recent manga. Stay tuned.

This is a week late, but it's a big one and there are some big reveals to go with it. We've spent over half the story trying to get to the Temple of the Elements, so I'm sure you're eager to see what all the hubbub's about. You can find out in Chapter 32 of Tellus. Now, the plan is to have Chapter 33 out next week so I can get back to the original schedule rather than offset the rest of the release calendar. While I'm working on making that happen, we've got CeleKing3 and reviews coming up. Stay tuned.

This week we're going to look at the Ple Ple Pleiades OAVs: "Nazarock's Greatest Crisis", "A Magical Beast's Love", "The Automaton and the Cat", and "Fugitive Clementine". Next we close out our coverage of Fire Emblem: Sword of the Conqueror with Volume 9 and Volume 10. There is a Volume 11 that's the final volume, but I need to get my hands on it first. I've got plenty more manga to keep us going for a while, but I've got to figure out what else I'm going to do. In the meantime, I'll be making up last week's missing chapter of Tellus along with our regularly scheduled chapter of CeleKing3. Stay tuned.

King Charles is going to try to make his case to the people in Chapter 4 of JJ2. Which sounds better: submitting to a galaxy-spanning empire that can roast planets like popcorn or fighting a galaxy-spanning empire that can roast planets like popcorn? Guess it depends on the kind of person you are.

As you've no doubt noticed, I don't have this week's chapter of Tellus ready, but I'm going to try to get it out next week. In the meantime, we've got reviews coming up. Stay tuned.

We round things out with the Isekai Quartet this week, starting with Season 1 of Re: Zero - Starting Life in Another World from Zero. We also have two ONA spinoffs by Studio Puyukai (the same bunch behind Ple Ple Pleiades), Re: Zero - Starting Break Time from Zero and Re: PETIT - Starting Life in Another World from PETIT. Next is Volume 5 and Volume 6 of Fire Emblem: Sword of the Conqueror. Next week I plan on showcasing the rest of Ple Ple Pleiades and we'll be wrapping up our coverage of the FE manga too (until I can get my hands on Volume 11). Look for more Tellus (if I can get the chapter done before the deadline) and JJ2. Stay tuned.

I know this is late, but my routine was disturbed yesterday and it's thrown me off. We've got some pint-sized Nazarick fun for you this week with Ple Ple Pleiades and its sequels, Ple Ple Pleiades 2 and Ple Ple Pleiades 3. We also have Volume 5 and Volume 6 of Fire Emblem: Sword of the Conqueror. The comics/manga review section is undergoing reorganization like what I did revently for the movie reviews, so expect the occasional broken link until I have all the files updated. Next week we'll be rounding out the Isekai Quartet with a look at Re:Zero. In the meantime, look for more CeleKing3. Stay tuned.

While last week I ran some recently concluded series, we're going to go back a few years for Maoyu Maou Yuusha and The Saga of Tanya the Evil (which you may otherwise know as Youjo Senki). Our third entry had a theatrical release but was also ran on TV as a miniseries, so I opted to go with the latter classification. The series in question is Zoku Owarimonogatari, which as of now concludes the anime adaptation of the Monogatari Series. Next is more Fire Emblem: Sword of the Conqueror, namely Volume 3 and Volume 4. I haven't quite decided on the plan for next week. On the story front, at least, the path is clear. Look for more Tellus and JJ2. Stay tuned.

As for manga, we're going to be covering Fire Emblem: Sword of the Conqueror, a spinoff of FE6, starting with Volume 1 and Volume 2. It may be the first day in a new era here in Japan, but let's not forget that it's also the observation of International Ayame Jellybean Day. Everyone's favorite fuzzy girl is twelve years old and though I've been promising it for years now, I've finally started to start catching up on adding entries to the Mascot Gallery, starting with a new page, "The Cat Returns (to Japan)". Right now that's just a fraction of the 180 images I have to prep, so I'll be steadily adding more over the course of the next few days until we're good to go. My plans have been thwarted somewhat. There were three movie reviews I was going to put up, but two of them don't seem to have made the transfer over to my travel laptop, so rather than rewrite them from scratch, I'll just save them for another day. Instead you get the surviving movie, 1981's Mommie Dearest, and Season 2 of Westworld. We also have Volume 28 of Attack on Titan and rare book review of Frank Herbert's Dune. Next week I've got a quintet of anime series, several from the recently concluded season. Look for more Tellus and JJ2 as well. Stay tuned.

Was she a living saint who heard the voice of God or was she just a loony peasant girl? Either way, burning her at the stake probably wasn't the best idea. We're talking about Joan of Arc. First is two French adaptations of her trial, 1928's The Passion of Joan of Arc and 1962's The Trial of Joan of Arc. For something a little lighter, we also have the 1957 film adaption of George Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan. From there, we bring our coverage of Dagashi Kashi to a close with Volume 11 and also roll out the recently released Volume 19 of One Punch Man. We'll be rounding out the films I saw during last month's vacation next week and I can work on building up some new material in the interim. Look for more CeleKing3. Stay tuned.

There's no real theme connecting this week's movies other than they were things I saw during my last vacation. Two are from opposite ends of the 80s and one has special effects that would've been bad even back then. First up is The Final Countdown (betcha can't read that without the song playing in your head), followed by Weekend at Bernie's, and lastly Princess of Mars, which apparently is marketed as John Carter of Mars, not to be confused with the John Carter of Mars whose marketing people were too cowardly to add the "of Mars" bit. Next up is Volume 9 and Volume 10 of Dagashi Kashi. Although I don't quite have any Easter-themed films for next week, we'll step away from the current series for a moment to feature a trio of films about Joan of Arc (which will also allow me to have something to put in 1928's slot in the index). Looks for more Tellus and JJ2. Stay tuned.

Well, crap. -_- So, yeah, during my time back in the States, I decided to check out the Berserk Golden Age Arc films and anyone who knows Berserk knows how the Golden Age Arc ends. We've got the whole set here: The Egg of the King, The Battle for Doldrey and Advent. Personally, I prefer the '97 series even if the budget wasn't always there, but these films are a darn sight better than the inept 2016 series. Moving on, we've got Volume 7 and Volume 8 of Dagashi Kashi. Next week's films don't fit together so neatly, but variety is the spice of life. Look for more CeleKing3 as well. Stay tuned.

It turns out that I don't bounce back from transoceanic voyages as quickly as I think I do. Maybe we should operate under the assumption from now on that when I travel halfway across the globe, there may not be an update in the offing. That's no excuse for this update being a day late, but by the time I realized I needed to do the update, I was on the verge of crashing out, so we're doing it now. 1943 continues to enjoy its time in the spotlight as we look at three documentaries that came out while World War II was still ongoing. First is December 7th, but rather than the censored and cut-down version by John Ford, this is the original and you can easily argue the "documentary" label doesn't quite fit. Anyway, speaking of John Ford, we have a training film he made for the OSS, How to Operate Behind Enemy Lines. Lastly is a somewhat galling entry in the "Why We Fight" series, The Battle of Russia, which carries water for Uncle Joe because supposedly Uncle Wolf was worse. (I tend to share the opinion of the Warsaw rabbi from the film Defiance on the subject, but that's neither here nor there.) Next up is Volume 3 and Volume 4 of Dagashi Kashi. We may stick with 1943 a bit longer or I may have something else for you next week. Also, more CeleKing3. Stay tuned.

I knew I was going to start running reviews of the Dagashi Kashi manga starting this week, but I was at a loss when it came to what was going to fill the remaining three slots in the queue. Before now, you may have noticed in the index by year in the movie section that 1943 was suspiciously lacking any films. It's not that I didn't have any reviews of material from '43 written, just that none of it had made its way to the site yet. Well, that's going to change. We kick things off with a trio of WWII films that came out while the war was still going on. First is Air Force from director Howard Hawks, followed by the Tyrone Power submarine flick Crash Dive and the Humphrey Bogart movie Sahara (not to be confused by the 2005 Dirk Pitt movie starring Matthew McConaughey). And now, for manga, we've got Volume 1 and Volume 2 of Dagashi Kashi. '43 will be getting some more love with some documentaries next week. We're also bringing you more Tellus and TG. Stay tuned.

My efforts to restructure the movie review section have gummed up the works a bit, but now I have the basic structure sorted out. I've still got some work to do, but things are coming along, so I'm going to go ahead and post the belated reviews.

You might wonder why this week's reviews in Black History Month have no black people on the posters. Well, that's because our featured actor tends to play second fiddle (or third or fourth...). We're talking about Keith David. I was first introduced to him in his role as Goliath in Gargoyles and I've been paying attention to his appearances ever since. Of the five films we're looking at this week, let's start where the one in which he's featured most prominently, John Carpenter's They Live, opposite Roddy Piper. (As far as reviews that've already been posted, he's also a major character in John Carpenter's The Thing.) He also takes the secondary role (though not quite as memorably) in the Steven Seagal film Marked for Death, where he's perhaps the best thing about the movie. Next is the Sam Raimi Western The Quick and the Dead. Lastly are two films where he plays a smaller role as an authority figure, as General Kimsey in Armageddon and the police captain in Hollywood Homicide. We'll be finishing our Black History Month coverage by going to the Dark Continent Motherland. Look for more Tellus and TG as well. Stay tuned.

It's time for some hard-hitting blaxploitation action. First, we fill in a piece of the puzzle that's been hanging for a while. It's Shaft's Big Score, the second entry in the original Shaft trilogy. It fits in well with the recent release of the trailer for the new reboot/who-knows-what. Next is Jim Kelly in The Tattoo Connection (also known as Black Belt Jones 2 in some places). We then get Fred Williams, Jim Brown, Jim Kelly and Richard Roundtree all together for One Down, Two to Go. Next we give the female side their shake with TNT Jackson (though she's no Cleopatra Jones, I'll tell you that). Lastly, we have a sort of blaxploitation (in that it has an exploitation of blackness) in Tropic Thunder. Blackface is making the rounds, I hear, so have some fun with it. As for next week, I have two words for you: Keith. David. That's right. ^_^ Look for more CeleKing3 as well this week. Stay tuned.

It's that time once again for our Black History Month movie review feature and we kick things off with the every-classy Sidney Poitier in his first major film role, 1950's No Way Out, as well as his third outing as MISTER Tibbs in The Organization. Backing him up is Morgan Freeman in Kiss the Girls, Oblivion and Last Knights. My goal is to get my hands on 1987's Street Smart for next year. Speaking of getting my hands on films, I'm going to have to work on that or else this feature is going nowhere fast. For the time being, I'm going to say we'll have some blaxploitation next week. I've got one of the missing pieces in our collection already lined up and I'll try to scrounge up some more stuff to go with it. Silly me. I almost forgot to note the anniversary. You'd think after 12 years I'd have my act together. Well, after last year's drama, me posting a few minutes after the regularly scheduled update is a minor thing. Anyway, let's take a look at what we can expect for 2019. TG is going to be the first of the three stories in serialization to finish, in the latter part of March while Tellus should end in September. CeleKing3 is going to continue until the beginning of next January. What's going to take their place? Well, I was thinking about Junker Jorg 2 taking over after TG, The Knight's Twilight following Tellus, and Everyday Magic 2 following CeleKing3. That should cover the major plans. I haven't thought of any new features to add to the site. Updating the mascot's gallery would be nice, though. We'll see what the year brings. Stay tuned.

I've managed to pull together enough material for this week's reviews. First is Dagashi Kashi and its sequel, Dagashi Kashi 2. And though I was going to wait until I could get my hands on FLCL Alternative before I posted this, I'll go ahead and give you the original FLCL. Last but not least, we have the conclusion of the Death Note manga with Volume 12 and Volume 13. Next week will be February, which means our annual Black History Month Bonanza and... It may look like the mascot is in the mood for travel and while she would try to get in the bag before it was filled with omiyage, the real reason she's perhed there is because the bag happened to be directly under the vent for the heater. We can pretend she's a neko bound on a voyage to tie in with Chapter 23 of TG. In other news, I've secured the plan for the weekend's reviews. I've got the anime part taken care of. We resume our coverage of the Death Note manga with Volume 10 and Volume 11. I can't guarantee we'll conclude next week because I don't know if I'll have the last two volumes read by then. We then round things out with the conclusion of the animated Godzilla trilogy: Godzilla: The Planet Eater. I don't really have a plan for next week's reviews, but seeing how it's the site's anniversary, I should think of something special. 2018 was a pretty good year for anime. If nothing else, I was watching more series than I have in a good while. From the recently concluded fall season, I've got three series for you. First is Goblin Slayer, which I alluded to back when I posted the Overlord III review. Next is Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, which goes well with my earlier Monogatari Series reviews, and lastly we keep the Trigger love alive with SSSS.Gridman. On the manga front, we're going to resume our coverage of Death Note later so I can bring you two December releases: Volume 27 of Attack on Titan and Volume 18 of One Punch Man. Besides Death Note, I think I'll review the two mobile games I've been playing lately along with something else TBD. Look for more CeleKing3. Stay tuned.

Now there's a mascot with resolve in her eyes, the resolve to face whatever comes. Maybe someone will be showing similar resolve in Chapter 22 of TG. We've got a selection of anime from last season and some recent manga coming up on the weekend. Stay tuned.

When we last saw her, our girl was in a bad way, but maybe there's help to be had in Chapter 22 of Tellus. Look for more TG and reviews in the coming days. Stay tuned.

It was promised last week but you're getting it now. We've got the movies I saw on the airplane on my recent trip to the States (plus one theatrical release). First is what I was expecting to be a masochistic double feature rendered a passable viewing experience by rock-bottom expectations. It's Solo: A Star Wars Story and The Predator. Next is two good films that delivered on their promise: Mirai and Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Courtesy of my sister, our final entry is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. For the next couple weeks, I'll be delivering anime and manga reviews. Look for more Tellus and TG. Stay tuned.

Yasuko probably wishes she had such a convenient means of transportation. A belated Happy New Year's to you all. To the surprise of no one, I'm sure, the last few days have been rather hectic and I'm left with precious little time to recover before I have to get back to work. In the meantime, enjoy Chapter 1 of CeleKing3. I guess I'll be doing those airplane movie reviews I promised last week, so look for that. Stay tuned.
