Doom (2005)

Director: Andrzej Bartkowiak
Starring: Karl Urban, Rosamund Pike, Dwayne Johnson
Synopsis:
When an experiment goes wrong at a Martian research facility, a team of Marines is sent in to neutralize the threat and evacuate the staff, but little do they realize that they are walking into the mouth of Hell.
Impressions:
You know the reputation of video game movies and a game with a paper-thin plot like Doom doesn't inspire much confidence for quality cinema. I will say that while the story isn't great (and who was expecting anything different?), Karl Urban makes a good leading man and the Rock is of course solid in an action role. I have a feeling Rosamund Pike's character was originally written as a love interest because there is a bit of an off vibe between the Grimm siblings (unless they're a cadet branch of the Lannisters).
The infamous first-person sequence is both corny and hype at the same time. Some commentators deride the message about genetic determination and I can't say they're wrong, but there's really no point in taking any deep messages from the film adaptation of an FPS.
If you like brainless action, this is decent fun. Otherwise, you may want to look elsewhere.
