Synopsis:
A Scotsman leads a revolt against the English oppression of his countrymen in the waning years of the reign of King Edward I.

Impressions:
This movie may make historians weep, but there's no denying the impact it had on general audiences upon release and this sprawling epic still packs a punch to this day. It was an ambitious project for Mel Gibson as both the director and main star and credit where credit's due for what was accomplished. Yes, a little more attention to historical accuracy would've been nice, but you still have quite the yarn being spun. Besides Gibson, I want to give special nods to Patrick McGoohan as the ruthless Longshanks, James Cosmo as the wily Campbell and Brendan Gleeson as his son Hamish. While the writing may not quite be Shakespeare, all the political intrigue and backstabbery would be right at home in the Henriad. You get several big, bloody action set pieces and a stirring finale that is sure to leave an impression. I'm a little too much of a history nerd to give it an unqualified recommendation for your collection, but it is worth a watch at the very least (and quite possibly a place on your shelf, too).
