Impressions:
I'll be honest with you. I didn't figure I wanted any more Code Geass (and I say this as a fan of the original series, or rather, I say this particularly because I'm a fan of the original series), but I decided to give this a shot and watch it through to the end. The first important thing to note is that this series follows the movie continuity rather than the original TV series, which is already a knock against it. Remarkably, I don't think there's a single writing decision made that I like and any that I did find somewhat intriguing were subverted before everything was said and done. The plot is garbage, but how about the characters? While the main duo of Roé and Ash are decent enough, the supporting cast are ciphers at best and the villains are lame. I can at least give credit to the fairly catchy OP (which may actually be the first song by Miyavi I've ever heard; despite him being a singer first and foremost, I've only known him from his acting roles until now), good production values and pretty good mecha fights. It's rather telling that most commentary I was seeing was fans looking for cameos of the old cast rather than appreciating what they were given here. The overall response seems largely negative and I fully concur. I doubt many old fans will like what's being done here and I don't think there's enough substance for it to properly stand on its own for new viewers. What little merit there is to be had is vastly outweighed by all the negatives and I think for most people, you'll be better off passing on this entirely. Just go back and rewatch the OG series. You'll have a much better time.
