Where Eagles Dare (1968)
Director: Brian G Hutton
Starring: Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood, Mary Ure
Synopsis:
The British organize a commando raid to rescue an American general from the Germans, but the mission is not all that it seems.
Impressions:
This story comes from Alistair MacLean, who gave us The Guns of Navarone, and you can tell the similarity in tone and content. While you do have a fair bit of action, this story is more about the tangled web of conspiracy. At times I think it gets a little too convoluted for its own good, but this is part of how the spy game works and it even gets lampshaded in-universe by Clint Eastwood's character. Richard Burton is solid as the world-weary spy Major Smith and I also liked Ferdy Mayne and Anton Diffring on the German side. If you're looking for a WWII spy thriller, this is your movie. I highly recommend it.
