Impressions:
While I consider the original Top Gun to be a fun movie, I have no great attachment for it and I, like many others, were wondering who exactly was clamoring for a sequel over 30 years later. However, I heard a lot of good things about it once it came out, decided to give it a shot and I have to say that I was impressed. Unlike so many attempts at franchise necromancy in recent years, this movie not only honors its legacy but arguably surpasses its predecessor, introducing the new generation without tearing down the old. Maverick has a bit of arrested development, still acting like he's much younger than he is, but experience has done its work on him and when it counts, he fulfills his mentorship role well. Miles Teller shows solid acting chops as Goose's son Rooster, who nurses a grudge against Maverick, and he has a strong rivalry with the cocky Bob, the two pilots making a good complementary pair with their respective strengths and weaknesses. Jennifer Connelly works well as Maverick's old flame, who helps give him the push he needs when the chips are down. The fact that almost all the aerial sequences were done practically is quite impressive and you can certainly get a visceral feel for the real action. If you're a fan of Top Gun, it's a must-see and even if you're not, this could very well surprise you. It's an excellently done film on all counts and I'm more than happy to recommend adding it to your collection.
