The Man in the Iron Mask (1939)
Director: James Whale
Starring: Louis Hayward, Joan Bennett, Warren William
Synopsis:
When twin sons are born to King Louis XIII of France, the younger is raised in secret, only to be locked away in the Bastille by his cruel brother when his secret is revealed.
Impressions:
This is a pretty good version of The Man in the Iron Mask. Louis Hayward is quite good as both the wicked Louis and the dashing Philippe. I also liked Joseph Schildkraut as man-behind-the-man Fouquet. Warren William shows off his range as D'Artagnan but the Three Musketeers are practically non-entities, which is a real shame. Still, the characters who shine shine bright enough to make it worthwhile. Give it a watch.
