The Hustler (1961)
Director: Robert Rossen
Starring: Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason, Piper Laurie
Synopsis:
An upstart pool shark risks everything in a match against the legendary Minnesota Fats.
Impressions:
Unlike The Sting, this movie isn't all about setting up the big con. Rather, it's all about Paul Newman's character coming to terms with himself. Though primarily a comedic actor, Jackie Gleason plays Minnesota Fats straight in an understated but solid performance. I particularly liked George C Scott as Bert Gordon. It's a pretty good character study and a decent watch.
