The Dark Horse (1932)
Director: Alfred E Green
Starring: Warren William, Bette Davis, Guy Kibbee
Synopsis:
A wily campaign manager is hired to run the gubernatorial campaign of a buffoonish Progressive Party candidate.
Impressions:
This is a so-so political comedy that gets a few extra points for the amusing performance by Warren William as the campaign manager Hal Blake. Guy Kibbee is a good fit as the poor schmuck thrust in the role of the titular dark horse. It was interesting seeing Bette Davis in one of her earlier roles, but her character was a touch underdeveloped in my view. If not for Warren William, this would probably be entirely forgettable, but that edge he provides may just be enough for you to find it worth seeing.
