The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Director: James Whale
Starring: Boris Karloff, Elsa Lanchester, Colin Clive
Synopsis:
Frankenstein's monster survives and the mad Dr. Pretorius enlists a reluctant Dr. Frankenstein to make a mate for the creature.
Impressions:
Given the iconic status of the 1931 Frankenstein, I was disappointed by how little I liked it. However, this movie succeeds in making up for that. Boris Karloff didn't like that the monster learns to speak in this one, but I didn't mind. The real star of the show is Ernest Thesiger as Dr. Pretorius. Seriously, folks, he's the best thing about the movie. I was surprised how little screentime the eponymous Bride got, since there were some interesting elements about her character that I would've liked to see explored. If you, like me, wasn't terribly impressed by the first film, give this one a shot. It's worth it.
