Macross the First - Volume 4 (2012)

Author/Artist: Haruhiko Mikimoto
Publisher: Kadokawa Comics Ace

Synopsis:
The Macross is trapped in a gravity field and comes under attack by Kamjin the Ally Killer while Hikaru and Misa are exploring the Salla base.

Story/Characters:
We have an interesting juxtaposition of the tense battle action going on outside while delving into Misa's character and her past with Liber. We also get introduced to Max and Kakizaki this volume, with both of them debuting before they're assigned to Hikaru's new command. Being promoted to flight leader includes some growing pains and I do like the developing arc of his development.

Art:
The art is of course amazing. Everything looks simply stunning. Mikimoto has given a lot of loving attention to Minmei up to now, but now he shows some love for Misa, the Bridge Bunnies and Gina. Action scenes are first-rate and there is some creative paneling to deliver that action. Definitely a visual treat.

Other:
We get a bonus chapter about Minmei from before she left for South Atalia Island (opening with a few color pages) and Secret Files with character and mech designs as well as a blurb about the energy conversion device.

Conclusion:
This is a fine continuation of the story with some particularly strong character development for Hikaru and Misa. It's got everything you love and it definitely warrants a spot in your collection.
