Rin-ne (2012)
[境界のRINNE]
Volume 11
Author/Artist: Rumiko Takahashi
Publisher: Shounen Sunday Comics
Synopsis:
Tamako gives Sakura experimental candy that prevents her from seeing ghosts.
Story/Characters:
We open on a three-parter where Sakura gets brought down to normal while becoming the target of A-1 Grand Prix, a competition among evil spirits to show off their cursing powers. Poor Rinne works tirelessly behind the scenes to protect her (which she's completely unaware of) and we get some amusing misunderstandings along the way. Next we have a guy who has his own personal rain cloud born of guilt over a puppy he neglected as a child. After that, we have Shouma return with his kuroneko Kurosu as he's hunting a ghost moth for an assignment. We then have another one with Kurosu and Rokudo competing over the capture of an envious cat ghost in order to get the reward of some high-end cat food. Next is a two-parter about a haunted house targeting couple, prompting both Tsubasa and Ageha to lure Sakura and Rinne respectively under the premise of infiltrating with no ulterior motive whatsoever. I'm reminded a bit of the haunted cave episode from Ranma. Next is a cursed refrigerator occupied by a yuki onna who wants the duck soup she couldn't enjoy in life. Lastly we have a watermelon contest on the verge of being cancelled due to an ikiryou, with a bit of a mystery as to who the culprit is and an amusing twist for the end.
Art:
It's fun watching Rokudo and Kurosu go after each other. Yukata Sakura for the haunted house chapters is very nice. The yuki onna is also pretty funny when she gets petty with Rinne.
Conclusion:
I liked the multi-chapter stories quite a bit, and the yuki onna one as well. The other ones are so-so. It makes for a decent read, maintaining the standard you've come to expect from the series.
