Impressions:
I've seen the manga this series is based on in the bookstores and it consistently caught my eye. I didn't even realize there was a TV adaptation until it came up in a discussion. I decided to check it out and I was immediately hooked. So many romcoms are exercises in frustration where interesting premises and promising characters get squandered as the author starts fumbling midway into the series and we get stuck with a disappointing conclusion. While the final conclusion remains on the horizon, treating this season as a self-contained story, it's quite satisfying. I've observed that I tend to like romcoms where the leads' feelings are fairly clear and there's not a lot of pussyfooting around with a will they-won't they scenario. It's plain from the start that Yukimura and Himuro are in love with each other and the comedy comes from these two characters who are highly intelligent but woefully short on common sense running these convoluted experiments to scientifically demonstrate an abstraction like love. I like the meta-commentary by the audience surrogate Kanade (though sometimes I feels she's dumbed down a bit too much to be a plausible research student). The rest of the supporting cast nicely round things out, adding their quirks to the mix. The comedy hit with me pretty much every time, the most fun I've had with a series in a while. The conflict for the final arc of the season is a bit forced, but that's a fairly mild complaint (especially when stacked against the infuriatingly contrived conflicts that make up the entirety of many romcoms). I definitely recommend getting this series. I'm looking forward to the second season next year and will definitely start picking up the manga in the meantime. Don't let this one pass you by.
