Neon Genesis Evangelion - Volume 12 (2010)

Author/Artist: Yoshiyuki Sadamoto
Original Story: Khara/Gainax
Publisher: Kadokawa Comics Ace

Synopsis:
The military moves in to purge NERV. With the entire world against them, NERV puts up a desperate last stand.

Story/Characters:
We continue into the EoE material this volume. There's a notable change of Gendou saving Shinji and then proceeding to further cement himself as an irredeemable a-hole by revealing his massive Laius Complex. The man continues to amaze. Also, Shinji isn't quite as inert once things kick into high gear, a welcome change. Asuka gets back into the saddle as well in what is perhaps the high point for her character.

Art:
As always, when there's a big action scene, Sadamoto steps up to the plate to knock it out of the part. While Asuka's big fight with the mass-produced Evas really benefits from motion and the swelling score behind it, there's about as much dynamism as you can put to the static page.

Conclusion:
Gendou's heartwarming dialog with his son is almost reason enough read this volume, but we also have Asuka's grand melee with the mass-produced Evas. It's our last big action set piece for the series, so enjoy it.
