Synopsis:
When irregular monsters start appearing in the upper levels, the Loki Familia launches an investigation, uncovering a conspiracy with designs on one of their star members, the Sword Princess Aiz Wallenstein.
Impressions:
While hardly my favorite series, I enjoyed the original Danmachi more than not, so when I saw they were airing this gaiden, I decided to check it out. The story runs parallel to the original series but with a focus on the Loki Familia and the nice bonus of actually giving Aiz some characterization. If you like the idea of following experienced adventurers as opposed to the callow youth Bel, there's some appeal, but the real make-or-break factor will be how well you can tolerate the character of Lefiya. She can get really annoying really fast and if you don't have any patience for her yuri pining over Aiz, you're not going to enjoy yourself. I didn't mind her so much at first, but she wore on me as the series went on. I did like getting a little wider view of the story and contextualizing some of the events of the original series. In the final tally, however, I consider this fairly middle of the road. Perhaps if Lefiya didn't manage to grate on my nerves so much (or Loki's tired perv routine or some of the more inept fanservicey aspects), I could give it a solid recommendation, but instead I can just say that Danmachi fans will probably want to check it out while the general audience can take it or leave it.
