A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966)
Director: Richard Lester
Starring: Zero Mostel, Phil Silvers, Buster Keaton
Synopsis:
A slave plays matchmaker for his master's son in a bid for freedom, hoodwinking a pimp and a brutal captain in the process.
Impressions:
A musical comedy isn't my first choice when it comes to picking a subgenre, but, boy, does this one ever knock it out of the park. I liked Zero Mostel in The Producers and he's in top form here as Pseudonius. As the opening song promised, there's a little something for everyone. Verbal comedy, physical comedy, situational comedy, romantic comedy, you name it. It's a lot of fun. Besides Mostel, I also want to credit Phil Silvers as Lycus, Buster Keaton as Erronius (in his final feature role), and Leone Greene as Miles Gloriosus (those pipes, man). If you want a laugh (and possibly have a bit of a bent sense of humor), definitely give this one a watch.
