Kong: Skull Island (2017)

Synopsis:
As the Vietnam War draws to a close, Monarch piggybacks on a Landsat survey expedition to an uncharted island in the Pacific and they encounter the island's guardian.
Impressions:
A mere twelve years after Peter Jackson's King Kong, we get a reboot so King Kong can join Legendary's Monsterverse for his inevitable tussle with Godzilla. Now, the Monsterverse films aren't particularly intelligent, but if you want big, dumb action, this movie will deliver on that front. I can appreciate that the filmmakers didn't want to rehash the same concept, but what we get comes up short on both brains and heart. You can see where they're attempting to have some depth, but the script isn't up to the task. On a technical level, it's quite proficient. I certainly can't fault the visuals and we have some good creature designs. The score by Henry Jackman is also solid. So long as you appreciate the film for what it is and where its strengths lie, it's well enough worth a watch. However, if you're looking for more than just action and spectacle, you should look elsewhere (like any of the other versions of the story).
