Evil Dead II (1987)
Director: Sam Raimi
Starring: Bruce Campbell, Sarah Berry, Dan Hicks
Synopsis:
A man and his girlfriend sneak away to a cabin in the woods and stumble on the occult research of the former occupants.
Impressions:
This movie is a little curious as being both partial remake and sequel to the original. (There's some wankery about the precise classification of the movie, but we're going to sweep all that under the rug.) I feel something is lost by reducing the initial party to just Ash and Linda, but the addition of the new party in the second half offsets that. This is much more comedic than the original and I have to give credit to Bruce Campbell for all the physical comedy he puts himself through. Naturally, the high point is when Ash becomes the hero we all know and love. While still fairly low budget, there are some interesting creature effects (to include some stop-motion that's just a few steps shy of Harryhausen). It's silly and over-the-top, but if that's your bag, give this a watch.
