Moriarty the Patriot (2020-2021)
[憂国のモリアーティ]
Director: Kazuya Nomura
Studio: Production IG
Starring: Soma Saito, Takuya Sato, Chiaki Kobayashi
Episodes: 24
Synopsis:
When commoners find themselves oppressed by the aristocracy, they turn to the crime consultant James Moriarty to mete out his own brand of justice.
Impressions:
Sherlock Holmes adaptations are a dime a dozen, but even though the character designs indicate a fujoshi target audience, I thought it'd be interesting seeing a Japanese take on it. Telling the story primarily from Moriarty's perspective and the idea of having James Moriarty be a composite identity are interesting, even if William is primarily who we'd think of as the literary Moriarty. If you're mainly here for the Moriarty focus, you may not like how we transition more to the conventional take of having Sherlock in the protagonist role. A number of familiar Sherlock stories get adapted but with some twists you wouldn't expect. I don't know what a dedicated Sherlockian would make of this series, but I enjoyed it and would recommend giving it a watch.
