Impressions:
I didn't pick this one up right away, but once I saw that it was going to be a story of palace intrigue, I was quick to hop aboard to fill the hole left by The Apothecary Diaries. At first it looks like the focus is going to be on the princesses vying for the spot of future empress, but then we get introduced to our true MC Yukiya, who is dispatched to serve the Crown Prince. Like any good palace intrigue story, there are a lot of plots going on, and it's fun watching them unravel. The second cour is less about palace intrigue than a mystery that risks upending the world as we know it. The dynamic between Yukiya and Wakamiya is fun and I like watching Yukiya's development toward becoming a proper retainer for the Prince. It's also a treat seeing mysteries great and small unfold in the course of the story. If any of this sounds appealing to you, then you should enjoy yourself. I found it a rather well-written yarn and worth a place in the collection.
