The Case Study of Vanitas (2021-2022)

Director: Tomoyuki Itamura
Studio: Bones

Synopsis:
In a version of 19th Century Paris where humans and vampires live together, a young vampire archivist crosses paths with a human doctor dedicated to curing cursed vampires.

Impressions:
The premise had my interest and I was quickly drawn in by the setting, the aesthetics and most importantly, the characters. The naive, cheery Noé contrasts nicely with the grouchy Vanitas and in the case of the latter, it's really neat seeing Natsuki Hanae play such a bombastic and curmudgeony character. The supporting cast is excellent and a real joy to watch (particularly Jeanne and Domi). There's a rich world with a lot of plots afoot and tangled pasts to work out. I mentioned before that I really like the aesthetic, so you can probably tell that the production values are quite high and you should have nothing to complain about as far as the visuals are concerned. If you're a fan of vampire fiction or really like the late 19th Century French aesthetic, you'll get an extra kick out of this series. I enjoyed it quite a lot on pretty much every front and can easily recommend adding it to your collection.
