Synopsis:
The disgraced Saint Disciple Iska is released from prison and given the mission of killing one of the greatest threats to the Empire, the dreaded Ice Calamity Witch.
Impressions:
This is basically a Romeo and Juliet story with swords and sorcery. Neither side seems particularly good and they put pressures on our star-crossed lovers that interfere with any efforts toward peace and reconciliation. Our male lead Iska is a little too vanilla for my tastes. I think it would be more interesting to have someone with a little more backbone set against the proud Alice. That being said, there is a good dynamic going in Iska's squad, though Mismis may annoy because she's so woefully ill-equipped for command. (If this was actually a plot point, I'd be more willing to forgive it, but as of yet, it's never addressed.) Because Iska and Alice are so overpowered, the big fights of the series end up being underwhelming, which is a shame because there are some interesting ideas with the world's magic system. It's pretty good despite its weaknesses but those weaknesses keep it from being great. I'd still recommend giving it a watch, so see for yourself.
