Sing 2 (2021)

Sing 2 (2021)

Director: Garth Jennings, Christophe Lourdelet
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson

Synopsis:
Buster cons his way into opening a new show at a lavish venue in Redshore City, but his plan hinges on bringing a reclusive singer out of retirement.

Impressions:
The first movie wasn't really my thing, but it was reasonably competent and I could see it appealing to its target demographic. There's a bit of a feeling of sequelitis here. They've got the grand spectacle of the Vegas stand-in Redshore City and the big show at the end, but the character work is much weaker. For the most part, the cast had their arcs in the previous film and they're not given much room to grow. The B plot about bringing Calloway into the act doesn't feel properly developed, but mostly just goes through the basic motions of how this sort of story is supposed to work. You've got Illumination's bad habit of mugging the camera, but this is just something I guess you have to accept if you're watching their films. In terms of personal appeal, this film doesn't have much to offer me, but I'm not the target audience here. I believe the filmmakers pretty well accomplished what they set out to do and if you are part of their target audience, I think you'll be fairly well pleased. More than likely, if you liked the first film, you'll like this one too. If this doesn't seem like your thing, you won't be missing out on too much if you pass on it.
