Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl (2019)

Director: Souchi Masui
Starring: Kaito Ishikawa, Asami Seto, Inori Minase

Synopsis:
Sakuta learns the secret of the two different people he knows as Shoko Makinohara in the latest manifestation of Adolescence Syndrome.

Impressions:
Whereas the Bunny Girl Senpai TV series has a lot of parallels to the Monogatari Series, this movie feels a lot more like Steins;Gate. If you like the Seibuta characters and you like S;G, then it works out just fine. I do like how this tackles and resolves the whole Makinohara issue. I prefer Sakuta's character when he's more collected and snarky, but given what happens here, don't expect too much of that side of his character. A good chunk of the supporting cast gets woven into the story, giving them screentime without bogging down the story. It does hit on a number of common tropes for the sort of weepy stories the Japanese love, so if you're not game for that, you may want to pass on this. However, if you're a fan of the main series, this is definitely worth seeing. Give it a watch.
