Impressions:
Oof, the Dark Universe... Now there's an idea that didn't get off the ground. Given how Disney and Warner have been flailing about blowing hundreds of millions of dollars on their cinematic universes, I guess I have to credit Universal for opting to cut its losses, even though I did see promise in the concept. So it goes. Going from this movie's reputation, I was expecting this to be a rather painful experience, only to be surprised to find a decent if fairly unremarkable supernatural action horror flick. I say "unremarkable", but both the action and horror sides tend to work fairly well, with the humor woven in fairly tactfully for the most part. Had the Dark Universe managed to maintain this level of filmmaking, it may not have hit the heights of the MCU at its best, but it would've avoided the depths at its worst. However, the box office wasn't there and, unlike its rivals, the studio apparently doesn't have the same elaborate money laundering organs to waste the annual GDP of small nations. As part of an interconnected story that goes nowhere, you may not see much point in watching this, but if you just take it as a single movie on its own, then there are far worse things out there. As much as I hate to say it for something directed by Alex Kurtzman, I found it just good enough to warrant recommending for a watch.
