Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 (2013)
Director: Jay Oliva
Starring: Peter Weller, Ariel Winter, Michael Emerson
Synopsis:
Batman's war on crime is poorly received by the authorities and the new police commissioner issues a warrant for his arrest, but with the Joker active once more, nothing will stop the Caped Crusader, not even the government's secret weapon: Superman.
Impressions:
I commented on the crudity of the writing in the previous film. Well, it's much worse here and if you don't like Frank Miller's particular quirks, it may be enough for this to be a dealbreaker. Batman's showdown with the Joker receives praise and not without justification. His brawl with Superman is also pretty good. However, the lines Batman crosses along the way makes it hard to take his side. I will say, though, that I liked that character of Carrie Kelly quite a bit. I like how Batman frequently threatens her with firing but rather than be petulant about it, she buckles down and works that much harder. Given Miller's typical handling of female characters, it's a nice change of pace. Even though I could go down a laundry list of problems I have with the story, characters and dialog, I still recommend giving it a watch, if for no other reason than to see it through.
