Impressions:
I'll admit to be somewhat intrigued by this film when I saw the trailers, but I never followed that up by going to see it in theaters. I regret that now because it really is a good film that didn't get the recognition it deserves and knowing what the plans for the sequels are, I'll kick myself if it doesn't come about due to lack of audience support. I've never seen Jorge Gutierrez's earlier work El Tigre, but for fans of that show, there's apparently a fair bit of tie-in, not just aesthetically but in the lore as well. This movie has a very unique aesthetic and while I don't find most of the character design appealing to my own sensibilities, I appreciate the distinct look that helps it stand out. The conceit of the characters in the story being presented as wooden dolls is clever and I like the larger effect of the movie introducing the Day of the Dead to a wider audience. I feel a little conflicted about the inclusion of Mexican-themed covers of modern pop songs, but it fits with the theme of making the story and setting more accessible. I really liked the dynamic of the core trio and the estranged underworld couple. There's good humor and genuine sentiment to be had. I strongly recommend giving this one a watch.
