Replicant (2001)
Director: Ringo Lam
Starring: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Michael Rooker, Catherine Dent
Synopsis:
A retired detective is brought onto a top secret product to create clones of terrorists and other criminals, starting with a replicant of a serial killer he has been hunting for years.
Impressions:
Jean-Claude Van Damme is no stranger to pulling double duty onscreen. He does a fairly good job of playing the sociopathic Torch and his childlike clone. Though JCVD has top billing, this feels more like Michael Rooker's movie and I liked him as the tough Riley, who can't really help projecting all his hatred of the Torch on his hapless clone. By the way, the government program that serves as the premise is friggin' dumb. Make copies of the most dangerous people on the planet in a harebrained bid to catch them via the psychic connection between the original and the clone? Terrible. However, without it, we wouldn't have a movie. Now, of course you can't have JCVD without some decent action. It's not a great movie, but Van Damme fans will probably want to check it out.
