Grindhouse (2007)
Director: Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, Eli Roth, Edgar Wright, Rob Zombie
Starring: Kurt Russell, Rose McGowan, Zoe Bell
Synopsis:
A double feature of two B-movie-style films: "Planet Terror" and "Death Proof".
Impressions:
I've commented elsewhere that I like the teamwork between Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. Here they come together to do an homage to the grindhouse films they like so much. Now, I could've reviewed their films separately, but because this was originally intended to be a double feature (to include the fake trailers), that's how I'm reviewing it. Of the two, "Planet Terror" is the better film. Corny, yes, but there's some good action and it's a pretty fun ride. I also rather like the main theme. "Death Proof" suffers from poor pacing with the two big action set pieces offset by overly long stretches of Tarantinoesque dialog. In a way, particularly how the first segment drags on really adds to the impact when we get the reveal. Depending on your patience level, though, it may be too much of a drag. If you're a fan of Tarantino and Rodriguez and the sort of films they're making homages to, then you'll want to give it a watch. If you take your movies too seriously (or if you're too impatient in the case of "Death Proof"), then you may want to think twice.
