Get Smart (2008)

Get Smart (2008)

Director: Peter Segal
Starring: Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Alan Arkin

Synopsis:
A clumsy analyst for the spy organization CONTROL becomes a field agent and is tasked with thwarting a nuclear plot.

Impressions:
I've seen a number of these film adaptations of old TV shows and there's a similar feel to many of them. That feel holds true here as well, but I haven't seen enough of the original series to really say how well this captures the spirit of the original. I can at least catch many of the shout-outs, but I'll leave it to the fans to judge if said shout-outs ring true or not. If you like Steve Carell, you'll like this movie. If you're not a fan of his schtick, I don't think you'll enjoy yourself. I found it all fairly funny. Anne Hathaway makes a decent match as Agent 99 and a lot of the other cast is a good fit. I want to give particular note of Dalip Singh bringing his significant physical presence to the role of a KAOS goon. As long as you don't take it too seriously (and why should you take a movie adaptation of a 60s spy comedy show?), this is a fun ride that's worth watching.
