Quigley Down Under (1990)

Quigley Down Under (1990)

Director: Simon Wincer
Starring: Tom Selleck, Laura San Giacomo, Alan Rickman

Synopsis:
An American sharpshooter takes a job from a rancher from Australia, but the job proves to be more than he bargained for.

Impressions:
Down Under and the Wild West have a lot in common and this film does a fine job of illustrating it. If you played Mad Libs with the plot of a Western and plugged in some Australia-related stuff, you could get this film. That's not to knock this movie. It's a good film on its own merits and it's the performances by the three main actors that make the movie memorable. Tom Selleck and Alan Rickman were coming off their big successes in Magnum PI and Die Hard respectively and they aren't slouching here. Selleck is a good man to have in the lead and Rickman is always a delight as a villain. Laura San Giacomo rounds things out as the quirky Crazy Cora. If you like Westerns and you like Australia, get the best of both worlds with this movie.
