The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

Synopsis:
Dr. Malcolm is recruited on an expedition to survey the abandoned Site B of Jurassic Park.

Impressions:
The first Jurassic Park left some big shoes to fill. The source novel did a good job of expanding the lore and giving us a decent plot to follow. The film doesn't follow the book much at all. In fact, the third act more closely resembles Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World than Michael Crichton's The Lost World, and I honestly think the film suffers for it. The fact that there's a sizable chunk of the fandom that roots for the bad guys should tell you that characterization is rather muddied (and not just because Pete Postlethwaite's Roland Tembo is unleaded awesome). Sarah Harding's characterization in particular suffers in the film and I don't really like that Kelly and Arby are replaced by a composite Kelly that has few of the traits of either. All this being said, the set pieces are rather good and the effects maintain the standard set by the first film. There are a lot of problems with this movie, but I'd still say it's worth a watch.
