Being John Malkovich (1999)

Synopsis:
A puppeteer stumbles on a portal that transports him into the head of John Malkovich.

Impressions:
I didn't really know what I was getting into here. I figured it'd be a bit out there, but I sorely underestimated just how weird it'd be. Don't mistake me, though. It's a good kind of weird. If you're up for some off-kilter surrealism, then you'll be in for a treat. You've got these delightfully awkward characters thrust into a bizarre situation and the madness keeps going till the end credits. John Cusack and Cameron Diaz are nearly unrecognizable as the dysfunctional couple and Catherine Keener is great as the amoral pivot of the love triangle they form. Then there's of course the eponymous John Malkovich as something of a parody of himself. There's also a cameo I won't spoil because it's pretty funny. I'll admit that the movie's brand of quirkiness won't be for everyone, but if you're up for the weirdness, this is well worth watching.
