Scanners (1981)
Director: David Cronenberg
Starring: Jennifer O'Neill, Stephen Lack, Patrick McGoohan
Synopsis:
A man with psychic powers is recruited by an organization to hunt other psychics, known as Scanners.
Impressions:
If you've heard of this movie, there's likely one and only one reason you want to see it. (Chances are, you've already come across a GIF of the scene in question.) However, there's enough here to warrant sticking around for the story. Michael Ironside is superb as the big bad Revok and Stephen Lack delivers a nicely disconcerting performance as our supposed hero. I like how the psychic powers operate in this universe and how the story unfolds. The creep factor is somewhat muted compared to most of Cronenberg's films, which may make it more accessible to the average viewer. I haven't heard good things about the sequels, but this one is worth a watch.
