Juggernaut (1974)

Juggernaut (1974)

Director: Richard Lester
Starring: Richard Harris, Omar Sharif, David Hemmings

Synopsis:
A bomber calling himself Juggernaut holds an ocean liner for ransom, prompting the British government to dispatch a Navy team to defuse the bombs while Scotland Yard hunts down the bomber.

Impressions:
This is a peculiar sort of ocean disaster movie in that most of it feels so mundane that it might as well be a documentary. Now, I'm left not being able to tell if it's good filmmaking or bad filmmaking. On the one hand, it feels like a bit of a slog, but there is a sort of verisimilitude to it. You can argue that verisimilitude isn't necessarily a virtue in a movie. You can tell that I sound conflicted on this because while I feel this movie is fairly competent and it does things you wouldn't normally expect from a movie like this, I wasn't terribly entertained. You've got a number of big-name British actors and quite a few recognizable character actors in the cast and that alone might be incentive enough. Consider it, I'd say, but don't expect an action-packed rollercoaster ride.
