Run Silent, Run Deep (1958)
Director: Robert Wise
Starring: Clark Gable, Burt Lancaster, Jack Warden
Synopsis:
A strict submarine captain breeds tension among the crew during a mission in dangerous Pacific waters.
Impressions:
Let's set aside the fact that both Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster were far too old for their respective characters. What we've got is a good, tense story that mixes elements of Moby Dick and Mutiny on the Bounty in the Pacific Theater of WWII. You can tell that K-19: The Widowmaker borrows heavily from this film, but as some people consider this to be one of the definitive submarine movies, I guess just about everything that came after it is going to take some cues from it. Gable and Lancaster deliver strong performances which is enough to warrant the price of admission. Also, you might be interested to know that this is the film debut of Don Rickles. Submarine fans are definitely going to want to check this one out. Give it a watch.
