Phantom of the Rue Morgue (1954)

Phantom of the Rue Morgue (1954)

Director: Roy Del Ruth
Starring: Karl Malden, Claude Dauphin, Patricia Medina

Synopsis:
A professor is framed for a string of brutal murders and the police refuse to look at evidence that points toward the real killer.

Impressions:
Apparently this movie was originally one of those 3D gimmick movies the 50s was so notorious for. I can't imagine it helped much. This simply isn't a very good movie. Karl Malden is pretty good as Dr. Marais and the gorilla suit for Sultan is surprisingly good, but that's about it. I suppose it serves the purpose of the plot for Inspector Bonnard to be such an obtuse blockhead, but, man, is it ever frustrating. I simply didn't enjoy the film, but you may find more merit to it than I did. Take it or leave it.
