Force of Arms (1951)

Force of Arms (1951)

Director: Michael Curtiz
Starring: William Holden, Nancy Olson, Frank Lovejoy

Synopsis:
A sergeant falls for a WAC amid the Allied campaign in Italy.

Impressions:
When I saw this, during the host segment it was basically called A Farewell to Arms with the serial numbers filed off. Now, I've neither read the book nor seen any of the film adaptations, so I can't say how true this is other than it being a tragic romance amid a world war. William Holden does will as an embittered sergeant made lieutenant gripped with the romantic bug while on leave. One thing I wasn't expecting and appreciated being there was how Joe was affected by having something to go back to and the consequences it had for him in the field, then him having to deal with those consequences. It's a solid film with a good character arc for our lead (and Nancy Olson's arc as the deuteragonist love interest isn't bad either). Worth a watch at the least.
