Baby Doll (1956)

Baby Doll (1956)

Director: Elia Kazan
Starring: Karl Malden, Carroll Baker, Eli Wallach

Synopsis:
Two rivals in the cotton industry wrangle with each other with one man's childish wife caught in the middle.

Impressions:
At first, I didn't think I was going to like this. Another postmodern tale of terrible people being terrible to each other. Then Eli Wallach comes on the scene. That's when the film becomes brilliant. Wallach's character is great and with him in the mix, the marital strife of Archie Lee and Baby Doll gets a lot more interesting. Controversial for its day, it's not too bad by today's standards. (If anything, the racial factor will probably ruffle more feathers these days.) It's a pretty good film and I recommend giving it a watch.
