The Mummy's Hand (1940)
Director: Christy Cabanne
Starring: Dick Foran, Peggy Moran, Wallace Ford
Synopsis:
An ambitious archaeologist convinces a stage magician to finance an expedition to uncover the tomb of an Egyptian princess despite the warnings of a curse.
Impressions:
This isn't a direct sequel to 1932's The Mummy but is only loosely related and gets bundled into the series that springs from this film. It's not terribly innovative as far as stories about mummies and Egyptian curses go, but it's competent enough. If the comic relief provided by Wallace Ford as Babe clicks with you, the levity will make a nice counterbalance to the suspense of the mummy attacks. Otherwise you might just find the character annoying and out of place. (I will admit to him getting a few chuckles out of me, but maybe I'm just easily amused.) I did rather like George Zucco as the primary antagonist Andoheb, though his actions in the third act didn't feel sufficiently set up. Anyway, while nothing amazing, it's still entirely watchable, so if it sounds like your cup of tea, give it a watch.
