Crossfire (1947)
Director: Edward Dmytryk
Starring: Robert Young, Robert Mitchum, Robert Ryan
Synopsis:
An Army sergeant tries to stay one step ahead of the police to sort out the truth behind one of his men is accused of murder.
Impressions:
It is interesting to see a postwar noir dealing with anti-Semitism, but it gets a bit ham-fisted near the end with the captain's monologue on hate. Maybe it falls under the "some anvils need to be dropped" category, but I think more justice is done to the subject matter when handled with a little more finesse. Don't let that discourage you, though. Other than that bit of clumsiness, it's a pretty good film. I particularly liked Robert Mitchum in the role of Sergeant Keeley and Robert Ryan was strong as main antagonist Montgomery. It's worth seeing at least, so consider giving it a watch.
