Yotsuba&! (2015)
[よつばと!]
Volume 13
Author/Artist: Kiyohiko Azuma
Publisher: Dengeki Comics
Synopsis:
Yotsuba's grandmother pays her a visit.
Story/Characters:
The main event in this volume is the visit by Yotsuba's grandma, but before that we get a post-camping trip chapter followed by a trip to the park with Fuuka to play in the sand. I quite like Grandma, who can seem fairly severe but is still rather indulgent of Yotsuba. I particularly like where Grandma is doing origami with Yotsuba and Ena. Yotsuba dealing with Grandma leaving is particularly poignant for anyone who remembers that sort of thing as a kid. We also get some setup for the next volume, which I forgot about until after rereading the volume (and unsurprising given the three years separating the two).
Art:
The quality of the art remains as good as ever. There is a particularly good sequence of Yotsuba wandering through the house at night that doesn't utilize any fantastical elements yet perfectly plays on childish fear of the dark. I also like Grandma's design, no doubt in part due to the fact that she looks a bit like my own grandmother.
Conclusion:
This is another fine entry in a rightfully beloved series. For anyone with fond childhood memories of their grandparents, this one is particularly good. Like the rest of the series, this deserves a special place in your collection.
