The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (2018)
[ゼルダの伝説:トワイライトプリンセス]
Volume 5
Author/Artist: Akira Himekawa
Publisher: Tentomushi Comics
Synopsis:
Link and Midna face Zant in Lanayru's grotto.
Story/Characters:
For those of you who've played the game, this volume takes us from the encounter with Zant after the Lakebed Temple to the Arbiter's Grounds. The main highlight is some original content that connects Midna to Zelda via their backstory. I really enjoyed this as it gives this version of Zelda some much needed characterization. I always liked the design of TwiPri!Zelda, but in the game itself there's very little meat to be had, particularly when compared to OoT!Zelda who was so thoroughly enmeshed in the plot.
Another interesting thing is what happens when Link gets the Master Sword. It honestly seems he gets a bit carried away with its power, to the point of actually creeping out Midna a bit. I don't know if this will be developed further or not, but I remember something similar being a plot point in Zelda Musou, where Link becomes overconfident after acquiring the Master Sword and it actually ends up corrupting him a little. We'll see if Himekawa goes that route or not.
The last main point in Link's introduction to the Resistance. I really liked the idea of having a team supporting Link's efforts and it'd be neat if the concept gets some further development here than it had in the game.
Art:
The art continues to impress. The kid versions of Zelda and Midna are adorable and they do a really good job of emphasizing the power and allure of the Master Sword. There are also some sweet moments with Midna. Though brief, the battle with Stallord at the Arbiter's Grounds has some good visual punch to it.
Conclusion:
Not only does this volume continue to slowly and fully develop the story in a way that no previous Zelda adaptation has, it goes beyond the source material to give us development we were lacking. I was quite happy with this and I believe any other fan will be as well. Get it.
