Noumen Joshi no Hanako-san (2016)
[能面女子の花子さん]
Volume 1
Author/Artist: Ryo Oda
Publisher: ITAN Comics
Synopsis:
A high school girl creates a stir because she always wears a Noh mask.
Story/Characters:
This is an amusing gag series revolving around how freaky Noh masks are. Other than the mask thing, our protagonist Hanako is fairly normal, which is of course part of the joke (particularly the running gag of her rejecting certain things for not being common sense). We contrast the relatively grounded Kaho, who only gets spooked at first and later on when she's taken by surprise, with almost everyone else being in a constant state of terror. Then there's Hanako's friend Ken-chan and the eccentric Noh actor Sabu-chan who disturbs even Hanako. We intercut the main chapters little short comics for more concentrated gags.
Art:
The art is pretty good. One of the main visual gags is shots that look straight out of a horror pic. This visual comedy is great stuff.
Other:
We get a bonus chapter of Hanako and Ken-chan from when they were in elementary school and the original award-winning short that was later adapted into this story.
Conclusion:
This is a good, quirky comedy that's definitely worth a read. Give it a shot.
