We Never Learn - Volume 12 (2019)

Author/Artist: Taishi Tsutsui
Publisher: Jump Comics

Synopsis:
The girls learn that Yuiga has given up on the VIP recommendation and wonder what will happen next.

Story/Characters:
The original premise of the series was Yuiga agreeing to tutor Furuhashi and Ogata in exchange for the school's VIP recommendation, but after all this time helping others with their dreams, he decides he's going to strike out on his own. Personally, I don't get why he can't use the recommendation to get into the school of his choice, but whatever. We then have a little chapter with Yuiga and Takemoto caught in a mixup over a racy magazine, a chapter where Ashumi-senpai gets to confront Yuiga over recent goings-on, then a three-chapter arc for Kurisu-sensei that rivals the earlier arc for Furuhashi. If you weren't on Team Sensei before this arc, you might be afterward. It's that effective at fleshing out her character and building her appeal. You really get to see how she became the way she was at the start of the series. We then lighten the mood with a chapter where Sekijo and Yuiga get stuck together for 24 hours by some experimental glue, followed by Furuhashi trying out some new lipstick, and then a chapter where Takemoto visits Yuiga at home, but before that, we have her visit the middle school swim team. Interestingly, Mizuki (Yuiga's sister) is the team captain and really looks up to Takemoto, so there's a nice dynamic there.

Art:
A particular treat this volume are the skating scenes with Kurisu-sensei. You also get to see Ashumi-senpai as a nurse, so that's nice too.

Other:
We get a couple collabo illustrations with Yuragisou no Yuuna-san's Tadahiro Miura to celebrate the second anniversary of Bokuben and the third anniversary of Yuuna-san.

Conclusion:
This volume has the biggest movement of Yuiga striking out as his own character that we've seen thus far (and probably one of the few we'll get), but Kurisu-sensei arc is almost certainly going to be the main draw. I realize she's already the most popular by a wide margin (according to the official polls, at least), but this is sure to add a few more fans to the pile. Give this one a read.
