Macross Frontier (2009)
[マクãƒã‚¹F (フãƒãƒ³ãƒ†ã‚£ã‚¢)]
Volume 4
Author/Artist: Hayato Aoki
Publisher: Kadokawa Comics A
Synopsis:
Ranka's singing is used as a weapon against the Vajra.
Story/Characters:
The main focus of this volume is Ranka dealing with the consequences of her singing being weaponized and Sheryl struggling with her illness. The latter doesn't get developed that much in comparison with the original series. The big Vajra attack in the second half of the volume goes a little differently than the original series. Honestly, I thought it was more effective in the series, but it's not a copout like the movies.
Art:
The art continues to steadily improve. We have some panels where the character art is quite good. The main action set piece is pretty good as well. The cover for this volume is a real low blow. Thanks for that, Aoki.
Other:
We get a two-pager for Eriela lamenting her absence this volume but promised a bigger part for the finale. No Dekarucya Frontier this time around. Instead we get a two-page promo for the final volume.
Conclusion:
I find myself a bit torn here. Yes, it's inferior to the original series, but most of the big emotional beats are executed fairly effectively. I guess if you're liking this series, go ahead and give it a read. If you haven't gotten on board before now, this probably won't change your mind.
