A Christmas Carol (1984)

Director: Clive Donner
Starring: George C Scott, Frank Finlay, Angela Pleasance
Synopsis:
A bitter old miser is visited by three spirits to show him the error of his ways.
Impressions:
There are some who consider this to be the definitive version of A Christmas Carol and a stong argument can be made in its favor. George C Scott's performance as Scrooge is superlative. The supporting cast does well (with Angela Pleasance as the Ghost of Christmas Past and Edward Woodward as the Ghost of Christmas Present being particular stand-outs), but Scott really is first and foremost, able to fluctuate from being rather bombastic to nicely subtle. Other people have rightfully commented that they go a little too far with the makeup effects for Tiny Tim. Poor kid looks like he's already got both feet in the grave. Costuming and sets are quite good as well. You may have other adaptations of the story that you have a particular affection for, but if you haven't seen this version, it's well worth checking out and honestly worth a place in your collection if you ask me.
