Synopsis:
A quirky girl meets an even quirkier "reverse" hitman who kills the people who contract him to kill others.
Impressions:
More than a few people have drawn comparisons to this movie and Grosse Pointe Blank and there are some similarities. We have a fast-talking hitman trying to get out of the game while pursuing a relationship (and being pursued by former associates who want him dead). Are you familiar with the idea of the manic pixie dream girl? Well, this movie has a manic pixie dream girl who meets an even more manic pixie dream boy. Normally, the MPDG balances out her blander counterpart and you might think that this high a concentration of eccentricity would be overwhelming. Looking at some of the response to the film, that does seem true for some people. However, if you can take this much quirkiness, there's this great chemistry between Anna Kendrick and Sam Rockwell. The dialog is really snappy and there is a bit of an element of comedic sociopathy that should appeal to fans of Deadpool and such. The fight choreography is good and I particularly like the dance battler aspect to Rockwell's character. There's also a good dynamic between Francis and Steve and Tim Roth fans should appreciate his role as Francis' mentor. I enjoyed this film immensely, but I realize it's not for everyone. I recommend giving it a watch, but if you think it'd be too off-kilter for your taste, maybe you should think twice about it.
Oh, yes, as the poster demonstrates, we have nekomimi Anna Kendrick. That's bound to do something for someone.
